Construction workers at a building site north of Berlin Hauptbahnhof have discovered a bomb from the Second World War. As the explosive is set to be defused on Friday, services at the central station will be temporarily suspended.

An 800-metre area around the bomb find will need to be evacuated by 9am on Friday morning, police announced.

The evacuation zone covers the central railway station, the economy and transport ministries, an army hospital and the embassies of Indonesia and Uzbekistan, a police spokesman told AFP.

As in the UK, hundreds of unexploded bombs still remain in situ beneath cities and towns across Germany.
