Latest UXO discoveries reported across the UK

Every year, thousands of unexploded ordnance (UXO) discoveries are reported across the UK, highlighting the enduring legacy of WWII and the continued presence of explosive remnants in both urban and rural environments.

From bombs washing up on beaches to grenades uncovered in gardens, sheds and attics – UXO continues to surface in unexpected locations. Discoveries are regularly made by members of the public, including magnet fishers, metal detectorists and dog walkers, as well as by construction, engineering and infrastructure professionals carrying out ground-disturbing works.

Because of the potential risks involved, UXO discoveries often result in emergency service responses, temporary evacuations, road closures and disruption to nearby activities. As a result, many incidents attract significant attention from local and national media.

To help visualise the scale and frequency of these discoveries, 1st Line Defence monitors and records notable UXO-related incidents reported by the press. This page brings together those reports, allowing visitors to explore where discoveries have occurred and gain a better understanding of the UK’s ongoing UXO legacy.
