Recent media reports that an item of explosive ordnance was found at New Brighton in Merseyside, on 12th March 2024.

Several buildings were evacuated whilst the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team safely inspected and removed the suspected item. The item of explosive ordnance was deemed LIVE and was later disposed of in a controlled explosion at a local park, just after 2pm.

Merseyside Police said: “We would like to take this opportunity to remind members of the public to always contact emergency services immediately if they find a suspicious item in a public place and to never take it back to a residential property.”

At the time of writing this article, no mention of the type of explosive ordnance that was found has been reported. 1st Line Defence have researched the immediate area around the discovery and our datasets indicate that this section of the coast was heavily defended during WWII – with minefields, gun turrets, weapons pits and anti-tank defences noted along the shoreline.

It is possible that the item may have been related to these defences or ground training exercises in the local area.
